St Swithin's Day
15th-Jul-2009 12:05 pm
Jiffy - wet pet

Oh no - We have just had a few minutes of rain as I drove back from seeing DJ - That now means it will rain for the next 40 days!!

For those who don't know what I'm talking about -

If it rains for on St Swithin's Day, then it will rain for the next 40 days - a tradition that goes back a long time, as you can see here.

btw - Is it just an English custom - or do the rest of the world watch the weather on July 15th??

I've never heard of St Swithin's Day, but my grandmother always said if it thunders on Easter you would have rain for the next seven Sundays.

*g*

Mmmm, I wondered if the tradition had spread, but thought it may just have stayed here where it originated.

My grandmother always said that the sun always shone on Easter Sunday!!!!

No, July 15th doesn't mean a thing to Americans. It is supposed to rain here however.

I had wondered if the tradition had spread, or stayed here where it started. Most people seem to know that rain today means a wet summer - even if they don't know the history behind it.

Thanks for letting me know.

No rain here in Birmingham today (yet!)... I know the myth of St Swithin's Day, but hadn't realised it was today! Hope we don't get any rain, then :D

Is the first time I heard about this tradition but I'll ask my mom just in case we have a similar one here. :)

LOL - Great to learn of other traditions around the world.

I've never heard of anything like that. It sounds very "English" to me-- right up there with crumpets and tea. :)

LOL

We have a lot of traditions - but we have had a lot of history!

We don't have it in Germany, we have Seven Sleepers Day. If it rains this day, it rains for seven weeks. Not always correct but sometimes. :)

Thanks for that - and the weird thing is that I say if I have sun on my birthday of the 24th, then the weather will break within a couple of days, and then be bad for the rest of the summer - So, although I hadn't heard of that German tradition, I tend to follow it!!!
