Soldier - silhouette

TV MEME - Day 19

Day 19 - Best TV show cast

I first saw this show many years ago - and enjoyed the story of a group of people getting thrown into weird "normal" situations.

DADS ARMY is set in a small Home guard unit during WWII (so if anyone is offended by comedy of that genre, or jokes about Germas, I apologise ... please cease reading now!)

This group of people though are brilliant - because all of us know them ... they are our friends, work collegues ... sports team pals.

Captain Mainwaring - the local Bank Manager who promoted himself.  A small man, with a strong wife (who you never meet)
Seargent Wilson - very vague and sweet ... he lives with Mrs Pike ... but her son just thinks he is a quiet sleeper as the spare room always looks tidy.  It turns out he has a minor title ... and was a Captain during WWI
Private Pike - "the" son.  A wimp - always has to wear a scarf ... too young (just) for the army)
Corperal Jones - an "old soldier" ... who still is fighting the Boer War in his mind ... loves nothing better than to fix bayonettes ... he is a the butcher, and does bend the rules for his favourite customers.  Very doddering - likely to trip you up.
Private Frazer - An old sailor - a Sot - who poors doom and gloom on every situation.
Private Walker - a Spiv.  How he is not in the army is never explained - he can get nylons, whisky, butter ... you name it ... always with a smile.  (I worked with such a guy, for 4 years!)
Private Hodges - the old man - too old and slow to be there, but still wants to do his bit ... even though he won't carry a gun - turned out he has the Military Medal as a strecher bearer in WWI.  He lives with his 2 sisters.
Captain Hodges - of the local APR - the rival group ... thus the one the all hate (for no reason at all)
Father Farthing - the local vicar - a very effeminate man ... who tries to "pour oil on troubled waters"

So - as you see, the whole of life represented in one show!

Here is a small clip - but again I do warn it is anti-WWII-German.

There are some details here, at Wikipedia or, the show has been so popular it has it's own Apreciation Society

BTW - My father was in the Home Guard in Barking, England in the war, and a few of his platoon were killed on active service.  They manned the search-lights ina park, and were one of the first line of defense against the London Blitz.

Yet Another Icon Meme

You know how much I love icon memes - well here is one that I have replied to in a few places - so am combining my answers here.

ICON MEME:-

Reply to this post, and I will tell you my favourite icon of yours.
Then post this to your own journal using your own favourite icon.
If you want, say which is your own favourite icon.

I also decided to add why I liked the ones others had chosen!

I have a few favourites, overall it was hard to decide ... but, I narrowed it down to

and my default one, which I'm using here in the post.

They are all James related, as are many of my icons (!) ... I love the effects on the 2 made bykazzy_cee  (the "Rock On" and default) ... and I am pleased to say that I took the pictures ... not that I'm proud of that, but the fact I was at those 2 events!
My EMMH is great - I love Star Trek, Voyager ... so act3scene1 made me a better version of the holographic doctor for my birthday.
Shelter from the Storm is one made by elizalavelle and is lovely ... Spuffy as we all want it.  True love - as we all want to find in RL.

Now, to the ones that others chose -

alwaysjbj commented on the Spike ones, but chose

I was sent this picture last year in one of those cute-picture emails.  I'm not normally into cats, but this kitten was so cute.  Recently, since gaining the icon space, I was looking for a knitting or crochet icon, and decided to edit this ... just so cute, yet covers handcraft.  And we all know, pets will sit on the work you are trying to do.

louise39 said that she liked my England, Cornwall and Spike ones - but chose

This is one by shinyshinybaum and I chose one that is, yet again James ... yet I often want to say "Grr.aargh" in a post.  I also love the movement ... shows both James and the phrase off well!

LOL - another one by shinyshinybaum and a variation on a wanted poster ... done during the filming of High Plains Invader.  I love the curls ... and the unshaven look works, as well.
But "James + Wanted" seem appropriate, doesn't it?

And, finally sarian71 chose

I am a huge Cary Grant fan - just love his way to be able to express himself with a look ... as act3scene1 has chosen here in one of 4 she made for me.

Cheers

Bude Pic Scam 1

As I told you, I had Mum, Dad and Jiffy for the weekend - and the weather was lovely ... so although it was only 3 days we managed to get out each day, and have a great time.

This was on Day 1 ... before I tried setting fire to the house (for those who read that story!) ... we walked to the beach ... and 2 of us had a paddle in the Atlantic -

Now for a guided tour of our walk .....

Bude Pic Scam 2

On Satuurday we had to have an early lunch, as I had a music rehearsal, and Mum and dad were heading off to see friends .. but we still went for a walk.

This time we headed down to the cliffs on the left of Summerlease Beach and along the Victorian Breakwater ... as you can see, still hot and sunny -

One more set to come!

Adventure before dementia

Being British

Being British is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.

And the most British thing of all? Suspicion of all things foreign!

Only in Britain can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

Only in Britain do supermarkets make sick people walk all the way to the back of the shop to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in Britain do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries and a DIET coke.

Only in Britain do banks leave both doors open and chain the pens to the counters.

Only in Britain do we leave cars worth thousands of pounds on the drive and lock our junk and cheap lawn mower in the garage.

Only in Britain do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place.

Only in Britain are there disabled parking places in front of a skating rink.

NOT TO MENTION..

3 Brits die each year testing if a 9v battery works on their tongue.

142 Brits were injured in 2007 by not removing all pins from new shirts.

58 Brits are injured each year by using sharp knives instead of screwdrivers.

31 Brits have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while the fairy lights were plugged in.

19 Brits have died in the last 3 years believing that Christmas decorations were chocolate.

British Hospitals reported 4 broken arms last year after Xmas cracker-pulling accidents.

18 Brits had serious burns in 2007 trying on a new jumper with a lit cigarette in their mouth.

A massive 543 Brits were admitted to A&E in the last two years after trying to open bottles of beer with their teeth...

5 Brits were injured last year in accidents involving out-of-control Scalextric cars.

and finally...

In 2007 8 Brits were admitted to hospital with fractured skulls incurred whilst throwing up into the toilet.

I am so sorry to have spammed you all ... I was going to promise that this was my last post of the day, but haven't done my TV MEME thingy yet!

Oh well - these were photos taken on Sunday ... you don't get to see the ice creams though, as we had to eat them before they melted!

But you do get to see the explorer seeing the edge of The River Neet -

Then we walked along the bank and onto ....

Spuffy - Magic Touch

TV MEME - Day 20

Day 20 - Favorite kiss

Well, you have already guessed I will pick a Spuffy Kiss - but which one?

Most of them were stunning - but also were part of the stress of Buffy coming to life, part of a dream, or the result of a spell.

That then left me with 2 to decide upon.  The one from Tabula Rasa, is one that I have already seen listed - and although it shows their amazing chemistry, it still came in as #2, as it left poor Spike wanting more ;)

Whereas in Intervention the brief kiss Buffy gave was one she gave (IMHO) genuinely to the man in Spike who had loved and saved her and her sister.  It gave no false hope for either, and was part of the stress of the Buffy-Bot discovery ... yet, for those few seconds, time stood still.
