Italy 2018 - Day 4, Assissi
On the next day of our holiday we swapped hotels, moving to Rome. However we took a very indirect route so that we could visit the town of Assissi ... the home of St Francis of Asissi, and of St Clare (who founded the Poor Clares)
The Basilica of St Francis (where he is buried), has 2 levels

The inside of the lower level

The clothing of St Francis

Modern paintings surround the museum artifacts

The Upper Level

Views around the town ... showing the area

The Roman Temple of Minerva (now transformed into the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva)

The Cathedral of St Clare

St Clare's clothes

San Damiano - Just outside Asissi. This is where St Francis had his first vision, and where his followers congregated, and eventually where he died. As you can see, the original Church exists, but is now surrounded by a much larger building.

Inside the original chapel-

At the back of the building is a statue of St Francis, and every year doves nest in his hands
