A Writing Meme
30th-Aug-2016 02:59 pm
Groucho Marx, Writing
To help take my mind off the limbo that my life has become, I did a meme that I had bookmarked some time ago.  Not something I can do while at home as I amm too focussed on listening for my phone, but here with Dad while he is asleep I can let myself focus elsewhere.

I snagged this from thenewbuzwuzz ... Here are the rules:

1. Pick 5 fandoms and list them in alphabetical order

2. Visit this site to find your first Random Poem Of Power. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list 'em in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)

3: I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting - make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble - it's just inspiration.

My 5 fandoms in alphabetical order are -
1 Blakes 7
2 BtVS
3 Hercules
5 Stargate SG1

So here are my attempts ....

1   A Little History by David Lehman

They were not Jewish, they were Irish

Did it really matter where they came from any more, The Federation was trying to remove all trace of Earth. Maybe that was the reason we needed to cling to our national and religious heritage, Servelan was not going to win.

We may be just a small group of rebels on a prison planet, but the Federation’s days were numbered.

2 Decadence by Robert Service

A shabby, shrinking, crumpled creature

5 days already. 120 hours.

No amount of booze can help me forget for one single second. At least with my legs still damaged I can’t forget my total failure to save the girl. Maybe I should have gone up those steps quicker, if only I had jumped over the platform. Maybe, maybe, maybe.

No amount of maybes will bring my slayer back.

3   We dream—it is good we are dreaming by Emily Dickinson

What harm? Men die—externally—

… and then it is off to the River Styx and Hades. Tartarus, the Elysian Fields, so different from each other. How few people think of eternity while they are living their lives.

It makes you wonder where Hades would send the other gods if he ever had the chance!

4   Make Bright The Arrows by Edna St. Vincent Millay

Stock well the quiver

Bows and arrows would make smaller holes than bullets and shells. Even better if they just used a target and the first to get the bull’s eye won the war. Maybe a game of darts would be better, then we could all have a drink, as well.

Even better, a game of poker, so we can chat and drink.

Or, maybe just drinking, and the last one still sober wins.

5   Dream Song 126: A Thurn by John Berryman

dictator too, backhanders down of laws,

Dictators and laws. Sounds too much like the Goa’uld. Enslaving the people, with their false gods. Transporting them to other planets, and destroying their own culture and customs.

Although, sometimes it could just be our own military. The more stars on the shoulder, and the more detached from reality they seem to become.

So only one used the actual words, the rest just gave me an idea.  Hope they weren't too bad!

I bookmarked that meme as well, but I wasn't able to think of anything for any of my fandoms with the prompts. You did really well though!

Poor Spike!!!!

M*A*S*H is set during the Korean War, and is about the medical staff there, most of which are pacifists.

I share three and a third fandoms with your top five,

Stargate rates a third, because I should have stopped watching after Daniel ascended, or whatever it was. Pretty much lost all my love of the show over time after that, and should have stopped watching long before I did.

Learnt my lesson though and stopped watching Supernatural when it was going down a similar mood path.

Got a couple of eps I deliberately bought separate DVDs so I could watch in S4, but really there wan't much in the show that I liked; apart from General Cuddle Bunny, after S3.

And they did keep trying to get Sam and Jack together!

I did write a Buffy/B7/Firefly crossover I must hunt donw for you.

Belated thanks for this reply.

I admit that after Jack O'Neill left, that's when it lost me ... I ship Carter-O'Neill, and the whole thing of the Ori I couldn't really get to grips with.
